The South Australian Government has made substantial commitments to build an internationally competitive shipbuilding precinct – Techport Australia – to assist ASC build the Air Warfare Destroyers and attract other shipbuilding and repair opportunities. 

On behalf of the South Australian Government, Defence SA is responsible for the delivery and ongoing management of Techport Australia and the State’s broader commitments to the AWD project. 

South Australia is investing over $300 million dollars in state-owned infrastructure at Techport Australia, consisting of:

  • common user shipbuilding facilities comprising a massive ship lift (Australia’s largest), transfer system and wharf
  • a 35+ hectare supplier precinct for sub-contractors to establish operations on site and develop strong and efficient supply chains, and
  • a Commercial and Education precinct, including a Maritime Skills Centre to provide trade and technical skills for the hub’s users, and the future home of the high tech AWD Systems Centre, which brings together all of the engineering disciplines necessary to design, build and deliver the AWDs.
