The Chairman of Defence SA continues to serve his country with distinction. Following an outstanding military career that saw him rise to Chief of Army (2000–02) and then Chief of the Defence Force (2002–05), this eminent Australian is now active in the nation’s business community as company director and consultant. He also chairs an education foundation. A graduate of Duntroon, Peter Cosgrove was awarded the Military Cross for his service in South Vietnam. In 1999, as Commander of the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters, he assumed command of the International Forces in East Timor (INTERFET) until the force was withdrawn early in 2000. His distinguished conduct as commander in this high-profile posting led to his selection as Australian of the Year in 2001, and to his advancement to Companion of the Military Division of the Order of Australia.
