Vice Admiral David Shackleton AO

Vice Admiral David Shackleton capped an illustrious naval career of 36 years by serving as Chief of Navy from mid-1999 until retirement in mid-2002. He now consults to senior industry and government leaders on strategic matters. David Shackleton’s extensive sea experience includes Vietnam service and command of the frigate HMAS Derwent and the destroyer HMAS Brisbane. His senior appointments have ranged from policy development to operational capability, project management, procurement, and education and training. During his time as Chief of Navy, the Navy was operating at its highest rate of effort since World War II. In addition to this challenge, David Shackleton initiated organisational changes to bring the Navy’s leadership and management practice into line with best contemporary practice, positioning the Navy for the 21st century. Now a visiting fellow at the Australian Defence Force Academy, David Shackleton holds an Executive MBA from Monash University and has undertaken extensive academic studies in international management and defence management. An Officer in the Order of Australia (2000), he is also a Commander in the United States Legion of Merit.
